CITY OF RAINBOW CITY-COUNCIL MEETING-MARCH 26, 2007

 

The City Council of the City of Rainbow City, Alabama, met in regular session at City Hall at 6:30 p.m., and upon roll call by the City Clerk, Barbara T. Wester, the following members answered present:

 

Terry John Calhoun, Mayor

 

Council members:

 

Cora Kelly

Bobby McCartney, absent

Lloyd Matthews

Bryan Stone

Kris Cornutt

 

The same constituting a quorum of the City Council, the following business was transacted.

 

1.  The meeting was called to order by Mayor Calhoun.

 

2.  Invocation was given by Cora Kelly.

 

3.  Mayor Calhoun led the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

 

4.  Mayor Calhoun presented the minutes of March 12, 2007 for review and asked if there were any corrections, additions, or deletions.  There being none, Bryan Stone moved and Cora Kelly seconded the motion to approve the minutes as presented.  Mayor Calhoun declared the motion carried.

 

5.  Cora Kelly moved and Bryan Stone seconded the motion to hire Gerald Wesley Lyons as police officer at the starting rate of pay of $11.00 per hour.   Mayor Calhoun declared the motion carried.

 

6.  Mayor Calhoun announced that East Alabama will have a public hearing for the drainage grant at the trailer parks.   The hearing will be April 16, 2007 at 6:00 p.m.

 

7.  Mayor Calhoun announced that the Council Meeting scheduled for April 23 will be April 16, 2007, due to the Council attending the Alabama League Meeting in Huntsville. 

 

8.  Mayor Calhoun presented a request from the Chamber of Commerce for a sponsorship in the amount of $l500.00 for Riverfest.   Bryan Stone moved and Cora Kelly seconded the motion to purchase the ad.   Mayor Calhoun declared the motion carried.

 

9.  Mayor Calhoun asked the Council to be thinking of a person to nominate for the Board of Equalization.  The deadline is August 15, 2007.

 

10.  Mayor Calhoun stated to get the grant for the drainage at the trailer parks; the City needs to do a survey of the residents.  Mr. Tarvin, along with a city employee will need to go door to door and let the residents fill out an application.  There are 191 households, and income will determine if the city is qualified for the grant.

 

11.  Mayor Calhoun presented a letter the city clerk received congratulating the clerk and the city for earning a Silver Award for the low ratio of claims on worker’s compensation.

12.  Mayor Calhoun stated that the Easter Egg Hunt will be Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. off Lumley Road, near Rainbow Middle School.  The Special Education egg hunt will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at John Jones School.

 

13.  Lloyd Matthews commended Ricky Collins and Brent Elrod for picking up trash last week.  He stated he received several phone calls bragging on them.

 

14.  Kris Cornutt stated that the Summer Reading Program will start soon, and he will have more information at the next council meeting.   He also asked all citizens to set out their trash early, when it is their time for pickup.  He also thanked Tommy Hudson and Lloyd Barnard and all the men in the department for the good job they are doing.

 

There being no further business to come before the council at this time, Bryan Stone made a motion to adjourn.
