STATE OF ALABAMA
CITY OF
The City Council of the City of Rainbow City, Alabama, met
in regular session at City Hall at 6:30 p.m., and upon roll call by Barbara T.
Wester, City Clerk/Treasurer the following members answered present: Mayor, Terry John Calhoun, Council members:
Anita Bedwell,
Bobby McCartney, Lloyd Matthews, Larry Keenum and
Kris Cornutt. The same constituting a quorum
of the City Council, the following business was transacted. The meeting was called to order by Mayor
Terry John Calhoun. Invocation was given
by Kris Cornutt.
Mayor Calhoun led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
1. Mayor Calhoun
presented the minutes of December 28, 2009 for review and asked if there were
any corrections, additions, or deletions.
There being none, Lloyd Matthews made a motion to approve the minutes as
presented. Larry Keenum
seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun
stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor
Calhoun declared the motion carried.
2. Mayor Calhoun
turned over the hiring of a dispatcher to the Police Committee. Anita Bedwell made
a motion to hire Jenea McClendon at a starting salary
of $10.00 per hour. Lloyd Matthews
seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun
stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor
Calhoun declared the motion carried.
3. Mayor Calhoun
stated that Joyce Ponders probation period ends January 13, and he would like
to adjust her pay to $13.00 per hour.
This will be a $.50 per hour raise.
Lloyd Matthews made a motion to give her the pay increase. Anita Bedwell
seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun
stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor
Calhoun declared the motion carried.
4. Mayor Calhoun
recommended the City pay $25,000.00 toward the Chocolate Festival this
year. Lloyd Matthews made a motion to
pay the $25,000.00. Bobby McCartney
seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun
stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor
Calhoun declared the motion carried.
5. Mayor Calhoun
stated the Police Department has had overtime in the department and he would
like to post a temporary police officer position. The position will close January 21, 2010 at
4:00 p.m. The starting pay for a
certified police officer is $12.25 per hour and $11.25 per hour non-certified. Discussion followed. Lloyd Matthews made a motion to hire a
temporary police officer. Larry Keenum seconded the motion.
Mayor Calhoun stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor Calhoun declared the motion carried.
6. Mayor Calhoun
announced that Gene Lee is retiring in the Recreation Department effective
January 29, 2010. Discussion
followed. Bobby McCartney made a motion
to post the position until January 21, 2010 at 4:00 p.m., and the starting
salary will be $11.50 per hour and change to $12.00 per hour after six months
probation. Anita Bedwell
seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun
stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor
Calhoun declared the motion carried.
7. Mayor Calhoun
stated everyone has copies of the departmental reports and asked if there were
any questions or comments. Bobby
McCartney stated Sue Davis thanked everyone for the $100.00 bonus.
8. Mayor Calhoun
reported that a Disc Golf Tournament was held Saturday, January 2, 2010 at the
Vivian Lee Maddox Sports Complex, and most of the attendants were from out of
town. Bobby McCartney stated the
tournament was sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association. He stated he heard a lot of good comments
about the area. Discussion followed.
9. Lloyd Matthews
reminded everyone that garbage pickup on the 18th will be on Tuesday
the 19th along with the Tuesday route, due to a holiday.
There being no further business to come before the Council
at this time, Lloyd Matthews made a motion to adjourn.
