The City Council of the City of Rainbow City, Alabama, met in regular session at City Hall at 6:30 p.m., and upon roll call by Barbara T. Wester, City Clerk/Treasurer, the following members answered present: Mayor, Terry John Calhoun, Council members: Anita Bedwell, Bobby McCartney, Lloyd Matthews, Larry Keenum and Kris Cornutt. The same constituting a quorum of the City Council, the following business was transacted. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Terry John Calhoun. Invocation was given by Anita Bedwell. Mayor Calhoun led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
Mayor Calhoun presented the minutes of May 9, 2011 for review, and asked if there were any corrections, additions or deletions. There being none, Anita Bedwell made a motion to approve the minutes as presented. Bobby McCartney seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor Calhoun declared the motion carried.
Mayor Calhoun presented a request from the Building Department to move the Street Cut checking account from Regions Bank to the Exchange Bank, due to service charges. Kris Cornutt made a motion to move the account. Larry Keenum seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor Calhoun declared the motion carried.
Mayor Calhoun presented a recommendation from Chief Potter to give Derrick Bowling a one-step pay increase, due to completing Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations. These classes qualify him as a full fire fighter. His pay will increase to $11.50 per hour. Kris Cornutt made a motion to give Derrick the pay increase. Bobby McCartney seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor Calhoun declared the motion carried.
Mayor Calhoun presented a request from Big Brothers, Big Sisters, for a donation, due to losing some of their funding. Died for lack of a motion.
Mayor Calhoun said the Farmer’s Market will open Wednesday, June 1st and end at the end of September. The market will open on Monday and Wednesday. Mayor Calhoun also said the City received $54,774.88 from the State Department of Finance for the City’s share of monies from the Alabama Trust Fund. This money can only be used for Capital Improvement. Mayor Calhoun said he would like to get quotes on a new phone system, because of the age of the present system and problems the City has been experiencing. Discussion followed. Mayor Calhoun asked Bobby McCartney if he would check into this.
Lloyd Matthews made a motion to hire Perry McCartney in the Street Department.
He will work three (3) days per week mosquito spraying until mosquito spraying is over. He will make $9.00 per hour and work from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Kris Cornutt seconded the motion. Mayor Calhoun stated all in favor say aye. All ayes. Mayor Calhoun declared the motion carried.
There being no further business to come before the Council at this time, Kris Cornutt made a motion to adjourn.
